Are you a minimalist or do you like having a lot of gear close at hand? Knowing that will also help you pick the right kayak for your needs. So consider your own weight and the amount of gear and tackle you'll want to haul. You’ll want to think about the kayak’s weight capacity – especially if you are seeking a fishing kayak where you’ll be carrying more gear than just yourself, your PFD and paddle. How Much Weight Will You Be Carrying On Your Kayak? No matter what your experience level or type of activity you’ll be doing, you can’t go wrong with deciding on a Sit-On-Top kayak – which are the types of kayaks Vibe engineers for both its recreational yaks and its kayak angling yaks. They also float if the kayak capsizes, where a sit-in kayak can fill with water and sink. Sit-on-top kayaks are typically easiest to get in and out of. Here are some key decision points to help you narrow down your choices when you shop either online or at your local dealer: Once you know which options you've got to have in order to really enjoy what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be doing it, you can then start down the path of picking the right kayak for you. Knowing the answers to these initial questions will then help you decide what features are “must-haves” and which ones you can compromise on – such as “stability”, “speed”, or “propulsion type” (ie, paddle versus pedal-drive versus motor), and other considerations. What kinds of activities will you be doing in your new kayak – such as recreational paddling or kayak-angling? Do you plan on kayaking in large rivers or lakes, or in “small or skinny” waters, or, do you plan on being on saltwater areas like bays or inshore? You need to decide how you’ll be using it and where you’ll be using it. This whole box is smaller and lighter than a typical sealed battery that most people use. When choosing your next kayak – or your first – it’s important to think of the process as being similar to choosing a car. Here's the box mounted inside the hull, using a couple of strips of velcro. Vibe really needs to make this a standard feature in the future. This is made by a guy on the Facebook Vibe Kayaks owners group. You can see my "Hidden Hinge" kit addition here which allows the center console lid to be more easily opened. It comes with 2 1" diameter plugs and an assortment of rubber grommets for different sized wires. I used the Hobie hull wiring port kit for a nice watertight and clean install. For Lowrance, just screw in the transom mount bracket and you're done! This picture shows a solid cover, but they now come drilled out for better resolution of the more sensitive transducers. A lot of guys just zip tie the transducer to the protective cover. It's a piece of cake to install the Lowrance transducers, but I've heard reports that some others require some creativity. Protected from whatever you might run into and large enough to fit a variety of transducers. The Sea Ghost has a nice feature for people wanting to use fish finders: a built-in transducer port. 3S-4S 11.1-14.4 volt will work with the Lowrance units, but check your documentation. Here's what I used:īike Headlight Cable (for external connection): īattery: Zippy 30C 5000mah 4S (box can fit up to about 6600mah). It clips into the Hook4/4x/Elite4 Lowrance units in the back just like the factory bracket and adds some mobility. The RAM mount pictured is about $25 and well worth the cost. This is out of the way yet within easy reach. I ended up moving this rearward to just in front of the cup holder. The power and transducer cables come up behind the mount with enough slack to move the head unit around. Wiring from the transduer goes into the center console, where the 40 extra feet of wiring goes! Power comes into the center console below the lid (which is watertight-ish).
