The machine-breaking of the Luddites followed from previous outbreaks of sabotage in the English textile industry, especially in the hosiery and woolen trades. In the Welsh versions of Geoffrey's Historia, usually called Brut y Brenhinedd, he is called Lludd fab Beli, establishing the connection to the early mythological Lludd Llaw Eraint. 'Lud' or 'Ludd' ( Welsh: Lludd map Beli Mawr), according to Geoffrey of Monmouth's legendary History of the Kings of Britain and other medieval Welsh texts, was a Celtic King of 'The Islands of Britain' in pre- Roman times, who supposedly founded London and was buried at Ludgate. Different versions of the legends place his residence in Anstey, near Leicester, or Sherwood Forest like Robin Hood. The name often appears as Captain, General, or King Ludd. The movement utilised the eponym of Ned Ludd, an apocryphal apprentice who allegedly smashed two stocking frames in 1779 after being criticized and instructed to change his method. The name Luddite ( / ˈ l ʌ d aɪ t/) occurs in the movement's writings as early as 1811. Over time, the term has been used to refer to those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation, or new technologies in general. ![]() Mill and factory owners took to shooting protesters and eventually the movement was suppressed with legal and military force, which included execution and penal transportation of accused and convicted Luddites. The Luddite movement began in Nottingham, England, and spread to the North West and Yorkshire between 18. Members of the group referred to themselves as Luddites, self-described followers of " Ned Ludd", a legendary weaver whose name was used as a pseudonym in threatening letters to mill owners and government officials. They protested against manufacturers who used machines in "a fraudulent and deceitful manner" to replace the skilled labour of workers and drive down wages by producing inferior goods. The Luddites were members of a 19th-century movement of English textile workers which opposed the use of certain types of cost-saving machinery, often by destroying the machines in clandestine raids. No other multi-harness loom treadles as light and creates as large a shed, even with a very high tension on the warp. The Leader of the Luddites, 1812. These innovative design features give the Megado looms an indisputable advantage over other competitive looms. This unique warp tension control system allows the weaver to set and check the warp tension each time the warp is advanced. The Megado looms also have the Louët moving breast beam, just like the Spring and Delta looms. This main pedal and also the optional weaving bench are adjustable in height to accommodate the weaver’s physical requirements. An innovative construction ensures the action of the well balanced pedal to be very light in operation. The beam movement also compensates for changes in warp tension as the shed is made. This is accomplished by lifting the back beam at the same time as the shafts are being lifted. ![]() The Megado loom features a counter march shed. If you have any questions please contact me via electronic interface will give you almost unlimited shaft combinations using a computer and software from Fiberworks PCW, Patternland, Weavemaker, Weave It, WeavePoint, Winweef or Pro Weave, which all work with the Louët electronic interface. It comes with a computer and display to operate the loom. The loom is for pick-up only in Deptford, South London. The knife (lifting bar) slips out of its allotted slot. ![]() Several parts of the lifting mechanism appear worn. The buttons slip and do not engage with the shaft lifting mechanism resulting in inconsistent shaft lifting if any. Our particular observations are as follows: It appears as though all issues lie with the lifting mechanism. Unfortunately the loom has some issues we were not able to fix but if you are skilled and have time to look into it you might be able to solve the problem! Here is a quick summary of the issue: After getting the loom set up and ensuring everything is tied properly, we confirmed that the computer part of the loom is working correctly. The weaving width is 70cm, while the front and back beam can be neatly lifted for the loom to be stored more compact. We are selling a Louet Magic Dobby Loom! It has 24 shafts that are controlled via the attached computer.
