It may not be the best option for families where the parents are native Japanese speakers (that would be like showing Dora the Explorer to a native Spanish-speaking family). Simply watching these DVDs will not make your child fluent in Japanese (there’s not much conversation in the videos). I think these DVD’s would also be great to show at a bilingual/immersion language school. It might be wonderful for a family planning to host a student visiting from Japan, or a bilingual family who wants to expose their children to as much Japanese as possible. There really isn’t a lot of resources out there for teaching kids Japanese right now! This set is a great option for a family who wants to expose their children to other languages at a young age (Dino Lingo offers DVDs in MANY languages other than Japanese too). Overall, I am thankful to Dino Lingo for creating this program for teaching children basic Japanese. Here’s a sample video of what the shows are like: – I thought there were some wasted minutes between segments with unrelated animations – The graphics/animations are not up to par with other children’s shows (don’t expect Disney quality) Some areas I thought could be improved upon were: – I can tell a native Japanese speaker is saying the words – Lots of repetition which is great for younger learners Here are some things I liked about the DVD’s: I noticed my 2-year old son saying the Japanese words out loud the second time… so repetition works! They liked the first DVD enough to where we watched it twice in a row. My son was excited about all the dinosaurs and vehicles used in the show. Of course, my children wanted to watch the DVD’s right away. My daughter, who knows most of her hiragana, got right to work reading all the words on the flashcards. There are even more Japanese-learning products to choose from online such as workbooks and posters. There are flashcards for numbers, colors, animals, body parts, etc. I wouldn't leave until the entire Sapphire league had been reduced to ash.Daily conversations, greetings and animals are included in all five DVDs. If Duolingo sent me a message saying I'd been knocked off my top spot, I'd return like an idiot scorned and go nuclear on anyone who dared challenge my Duolingo supremacy. I, by contrast, was getting my kicks from obliterating innocent men, women and children on Duolingo leaderboards. If that sounds like gobbledygook to you, congrats on being an actualized human being. I'd rattle through lessons quickly, earn a 15-minute double XP boost, then maximize that time by rattling through the easy "story" lessons for 80XP a pop. I discovered little bizarre techniques, just so I could compete. These leagues are tough and some participants clearly have bugger all else to do but toil in the Duolingo XP mines. That's where the big boys play, but even getting to that point is challenging. The big papa top league is the Diamond league. There are 10 in total, all of which sound like they're named after Pokemon games: Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl and so on and so forth. You start out in "Bronze." But if you gather enough XP, you can gain promotion to higher and more competitive leagues. I was especially entranced by Duolingo's league system.ĭuolingo allows its users to compete with one another in a series of leagues, similar to the ones you might find in video games like Overwatch or DOTA. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Utica drag queenOn February 26, 2021, the series aired Corona Can't Keep a Good Queen Down detailing the season's production amid the pandemic, including unseen footage and reflections from the cast. The season was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, relying on strict protocols, including isolation and testing of contestants, judges, and crew. The season welcomed Gottmik, the show's first ever openly transgender male and assigned female at birth contestant since the series began in 2009. The teaser revealed that the season's premiere would consist of six "Lip-Sync for Your Life" battles in a Lip-Sync Extravaganza, along with a new socially distanced stage and werkroom design. Īfter the season's first teaser trailer was accidentally leaked a day prior, the cast was officially revealed by season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall on December 9, 2020. In addition to airing on VH1, the premiere episode was simulcast across 5 other channels: Logo, MTV, MTV2, Pop, and The CW, becoming the most-watched episode in the franchise's history. Casting calls for season 13 were opened in December 2019. VH1 renewed both RuPaul's Drag Race and its spin-off RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars for a thirteenth and sixth season respectively on August 20, 2020. The competition is broadcast on VH1 in the United States and showcases 13 new queens competing for the title of "America's Next Drag Superstar". The cast was announced via Twitter on December 9, 2020. Ross has compared her to Crystal Methyd & Yvie Oddly… well, both of those queens made it to the Finale & one of them was crowned! Tina Burner was this season’s Brita. The thirteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race premiered on January 1 and concluded on April 23, 2021. Utica, while being completely weird, has been making major strides. Also, I was a little surprised that Tina went home against Utica, but not much. While I don’t think this is the worst season, I do think this was the worst episode… it gave me dejá vù from when I used to drop LSD in high school. When Symone was named the winner, I shouted at the TV, “Show Rosé’s face! I wanna see how p!ssed off she is!” But when she was also named a winner, I threw my hands up in disgust. The double-win shocked the heck out of me. I did not, however, laugh at Rosé’s commercial. If the drink was called “Delusional Juice,” then it might not have been confusing to the judges. Maybe it’s because I understood the direction, but yes, the name was terrible. I’m sorry, but I laughed hysterically at Gottmik’s commercial. Your thoughts on this week’s winners, losers and everyone in between? Vote for the queen you would have canned below, then drop a comment. So imagine the viewers’ collective shock when Ru announced Tina’s elimination! Still, if ever there was a perfect battle to be rocking a giant dog suit, it was this one, set to Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps.” The sheer ridiculousness of Tina twerking in that oversized costume sent Ru into hysterics, while Utica was stuck doing a way-too-serious interpretation in her constricting gown. But it was a bit of a surprise to see Tina lip syncing alongside her, especially when some queens (*cough* Kandy *cough*) appeared to have put in far less effort. Given the quality of her commercial and her tepid reception on the runway, Utica was a udder-ly destined for this week’s bottom two. Whose beastly lewk was a beauty in your eyes? □ #DragRace /riEcjAghHu Symone’s foxy look was a hysterical stroke of brilliance, especially in its styling, but it just didn’t have the same wow factor as Rosé’s.Ĭheck out the rest of this week’s runway - including Utica’s tribute to Maleficent, Kandy Muse’s lazy alien outfit, and Tina looking like a gay version of Barf from Space Balls - below: Seriously, The CW should call her up to consult on HIM‘s makeup for the live-action Powerpuff Girls show. In fact, Symone probably could have been the sole winner of this week’s challenge, had it not been for Rosé’s devilishly stunning “Beast Couture” runway look (pictured here). Symone looking at the camera and asking “Is your blood sugar low?” was a moment in itself. Both took direction very well while filming their commercials, maintaining a natural humor throughout. That said, sometimes the top performers are exactly the ones you expect, like Symone and Rosé, who ended up sharing this week’s win. Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews didn’t need to tell her to look confused - she took care of that herself. Other missteps included Gottmik’s confusing sex juice commercial, which even she admitted made no sense Utica Queen’s uncomfortable teat suckling, a tribute to her childhood cow Clara, the same one mentioned by that medium last week and Olivia Lux’s overall directionless performance. The Voice Season 24 Poll: Who Will Win? And Who Should? Per V Magazine, Demie is a multidimensional threat in the entertainment industry. The 24-year-old actress is also set to star in upcoming projects such as Waves, Mainstream, and the short, Nineteen on Fire. You may also recognize her from the 2018 coming-of-age film, Mid90s, which was written and directed by Jonah Hill. She appeared in small roles on Showtime's Ray Donovan and Netflix's The OA. Since her debut in the new teen drama, Demie has charmed her way into the hearts of fans, and they're dying to know more.Īccording to Demie's IMDB profile, the young starlet has been acting since 2015. And in both of their cases, that steady rock is important to have in place.Although HBO's racy teen drama Euphoria is headlined by big names like Zendaya, there are a number of newbies in the supporting cast, including Alexa Demie, who plays Maddy on Euphoria. Whether their intimate moment turns into something more than friendship, or just was a reactionary moment thing, they have a safety net in one another-a place to return home to when things get rough. Jules has nowhere to turn after her confrontation with Nate, and retreats to Rue's house, where she spends the night and the two share an intimate moment (after Jules rejected Rue in last week's episode). As any good show should, Euphoria has set the stakes, and throughout the entire fourth episode, it all felt very real. The show has already handled his character brilliantly, depicting clearly the level of scheming, extreme violence that he's willing to go to to justify both his own moral exceptionalism, and in the guise of protecting himself or someone he cares about. It's been made clear that-like his father-Nate has a major secret he's keeping, and will go to dire lengths to make sure it doesn't get out. What happens next in this story, really, is anyone's guess. He's violent, reckless, and has caused trouble thus far for everyone he's come in contact with, starting with Jules, and going down the list: Maddie, McKay, and the real Tyler.Īnd in a show that's made such an important theme of duality, and the idea that everything is not as it seems, it's interesting that the show continues to wrestle and entertain the idea that Nate could not only be a violent, loose cannon of a person who truly needs to be dealt with, but also someone with deep-seated issues dealing with his own sexuality. Before their meeting ends, though, Jules gets one last crack off: "I think you're a fucking faggot, just like your daddy."Ĭlearly, Nate is established as the worst of the bunch in a show full of people behaving badly. She doesn't have much of an option but to comply, and is obviously crushed by the events that have just transpired. In another American Psycho-es que plan, Nate immediately lays out a long, detailed plot that-long story short-would destroy Jules' life. But it doesn't take long for the next shoe to drop-after even the slightest initial pushback from Jules, Nate immediately dials back into the methodical, violent, and reckless nature that we've seen in past weeks, and even earlier in the episode, when he got physical with Maddie and left a mark on her neck. On the inside, is he really "Tyler"? For a moment, both the audience and Jules herself wrestle with that possibility. This week's episode saw the truth of that reality depicted on screen, and we saw how Jules managed to react to what was truly a game-changing twist-and a heart-breaker as well.Īt first, it seemed that Nate really was speaking from the heart both in his digital correspondences and his initial words. For one, the first episode's closing twist, that Jules, who is transgender, had slept with Cal Jacobs, who was later revealed to have a violent habit of sleeping with members of the transgender and homosexual communities, and filming his encounters-behind his wife and family's back.Īnother that we all knew a few weeks ago: Jules' new online suitor, someone named ShyGuy, who said his name was "Tyler," was actually Nate, Cal's violent football player son. Here's why that moment is a major game changer.Īs Euphoria's first season has trucked along, there have been a number of details that viewers-and, at times, the narration from Zendaya's Rue-have known more than the characters depicted on screen.Jules, who had been texting with 'Tyler,' discovered that he was really Nate, the violent jock. This week's center character was Hunter Schafer's Jules.Stop reading now if you haven't seen it yet. Warning: This post contains spoilers for the fourth episode of Euphoria. 3/2/2024 0 Comments Lock up period stocksIf the share price has soared since the IPO, then early investors may want to reap the rewards by selling some of their investments, or if the price has tanked, then they may look to reduce their exposure. A flood of new shares can come onto the market if the owners of those shares decide to sell. This means the largest shareholders in the business can only freely sell their shares after the IPO lock-up expiration. Subscribe to upcoming IPOs and placings via your share dealing account or share dealing ISA What happens to a company’s share price after a lock-up period expires? Ultimately, lock-up periods are all about providing support to the share price, avoiding volatility and stabilising the market for shares in the initial months after listing. Therefore, existing investors are often prevented from selling their shares for set period of time after the IPO has been completed, typically for 90 to 180 days. If one or more of them decided to sell a large amount of their stock then this could seriously depress the share price, which is not in the interests of the company or any of its investors. Newly listed businesses decide how many shares to float, but it is not uncommon for founders or early investors to retain large stakes in the business after the IPO. The second is so they can cash-in some of their investment to date. The first is to raise cash to grow the business. There are two reasons why they take the company public. To ensure readability across screen sizes and resolution, sans-serif is the way to go. Sans-serif fonts abound online-and on screens. They’re also known to be easy to read quickly. Serifs are a great way to provide the eye something to hang onto when printing at smaller sizes. There are practical graphic design reasons to choose a serif font or a sans-serif font for your typography application, typically surround the medium through which your reader will interact with your text. “There are practical graphic design reasons to choose a serif font or a sans-serif font for your typography application, typically surround the medium through which your reader will interact with your text.” Is your reader seeing your text in an ad for a luxury item placed in a high-end lifestyle magazine? Are they reading a long form expose on an online newsfeed? Are they young? Older? These differences aren’t necessarily codified-it’s more of a gut feeling. Clarity and mood can come together to help inform audience-based font choices. This is a rather subjective measure of typefaces, but the prevailing cliché is that serif fonts are classic, classy, and trustworthy, while sans-serif fonts are modern, clean, and clear. Different applications require different levels of readability from text, from differences in size to print versus digital. If your text is hard to read, it’s pretty useless. But if we consider our feelings or impressions alongside the facts, the differences extend beyond feet, swoops, and flourishes. Obviously, the primary difference between serif and sans-serif fonts is the serif itself. Inspired by serif glyphs and hand-written forms but with more stroke variation than Grotesque fonts, these fonts are often found to be the easiest on the eyes-likely why the long-time default Microsoft font was the Humanist Calibri.ĭifferences Between Serif & Sans-Serif Fonts Look for an “O” that’s a near-perfect circle and an “a” that’s a simple circle-plus-stroke combo. Just like the name suggests, these sans-serif fonts are modeled closely on standard geometric shapes. Some find them uniform others feel they’re too plain when compared to Grotesque fonts. Iterating upon early sans-serif fonts, this category features more refinement in shape and size compared to their Grotesque cousins. You won’t find a lot of variation in stroke width, either. The glyphs of these typefaces look a lot like serif fonts, just without the serifs. Not an ideal way to enter the world of design. The earliest sans-serif fonts were dubbed Grotesque because that’s how they were viewed-misshapen, incomplete, ugly. Like serif fonts, sans-serif fonts can be categorized into subtypes: As sans-serif typefaces became more common, the ebb and flow of style trends and social movements took hold, creating competing schools of thought surrounding the virtues of these modern typefaces versus the tried-and-true serif typeface. While one could find examples of writing without serifs before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, that’s when sans-serif fonts rocketed into the public’s and printers’ consciousness. Serifs that are as thick (or almost as thick) as the glyph’s primary strokes are slab serifs-think about the typefaces you might find on early 20th-century typewriters. Bye, stroke contrast, hello standardized widths. Modern serif fonts have the largest differences between stroke widths-a striking look but taxing to read for too long and non-ideal for print applications. Possibly the most common kind of serif font, you’ll recognize it’s very pervasive member, Times New Roman. This transitional phase of serif typefaces features more size contrast between thick and thin strokes and are less evocative of handwritten text. These fonts have their thinnest portions on the part of the glyphs that would be a diagonal stroke. These fonts are exactly what they sound like: Exemplary of the earliest attempts at standardized typefaces, specifically designed to mimic handwritten text. Serif fonts can be organized into subtypes: And that’s how typefaces stayed for quite a while. To endear the new technology to the masses, typefaces were designed with serifs. Their size and shape were largely dependent on where the letter was in a word and their writing momentum.įast forward to Guttenberg’s printing press. When early (early, early, early) writing was done with angled or other sharp-tipped implements, small marks-almost like feet-were left behind be the writer. The import succeeded w/o incident, so I took the next step of converting it to PDF expecting to see decryption errors of some type. Out of curiosity, I imported the AZW4 Kindle Fire file for the Kindle eBook I recently bought. Reading it all, it seemed clear that the issue had to do with Calibre and Python 3 incompatibilities and that there was nothing to be done until the Calibre folks addressed the issue. Laco have used their experience to maintain everything about the original while propelling it well into the 21st century. It's true that all these extra features detract from the original 'flieger' design however, Laco were one of only a handful of manufacturers that made the original watches, so there's nothing to worry about. A date has also been added, and sits quite nicely at the 6 o'clock position. This is achieved in the usual manner but with an internal rotating bezel, offering a third zone option. Of course, this watch also features a GMT complication, and Laco have combined this exceptionally well. It is a slight variation on this dial that adorns the 'Frankfurt'. Type 'A' featured a triangle in the middle of two dots at the 12 o'clock position, with Arabic numerals or hour markers on the remainder. The dials came in two flavours, type 'A' and type 'B'. These watches played an important role in navigation during WW2, more often than not as a back-up instrument. The Germans called these 'Beobachtungsuhren' which literally means 'observation watches', the term often abbreviated to' B-Uhren. I can't believe just how well this watch transmits information diver's watches are generally very good, but this is on another level entirely. It's also a GMT, and that's not only useful for travelling, but also for navigating. Why then, have I spent my hard-earned money on what appears to be little more than a 'dress trinket'? Well, this 'flieger' is good-to-go down to 200m thanks to the two, screw-down 'onion' crowns positioned at 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock. Bearing this in mind their watch will, almost certainly, be some way down their list of immediate priorities. Indeed, why should they? If a pilot gets submerged in water, it's reasonable to assume that things aren't going particularly well. This trend normally manifests itself in the form of large, clear, no-nonsense dial that can be read in an instant, regardless of position however, the vast majority have little resilience when it comes to any form of liquid shenanigans. Generally speaking, these types of watches follow a trend, much like dive watches do. Uses the closest city, rather than the more common Eastern,Ĭentral, Mountain or Pacific time zones in the United States. As I spend quite a bit of my time below sea level, you could be forgiven for thinking 'What does this guy need a pilot's watch for?', and I can see where your coming from.
